Retired Foreign Service Officer Molly Williamson served as Chief of Mission and Consul General in Jerusalem during the Madrid Peace Process (1991-93) which culminated in the Oslo Accords. Using the Oslo Accords and other Middle East talks as examples, she will discuss the intricacies and challenges of such high-level negotiations. How do negotiators navigate such topics as: agreeing on the issues to be addressed; timing; cross cultural (mis)understandings; tools to deal with mistrust; the impotence of power; deciding when to walk away; and unintended consequences?
