Description
The Nabis (the prophets or seers)—including Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard , Paul Serusier, Maurice Denis, Felix Vallotton—reveled in the intimate scenes of everyday life of their families and friends. Their (usually) small scale, decorative domestic genre pictures were a striking contrast to typical academic subjects seen in the Salon. The group itself served as a transition from Impressionism to the isms (symbolism, fauvism) of the early modern period. We will look at the range of subjects addressed by the Nabis with a focus on their domestic genre subjects of dining rooms, parlors and women in gardens, etc.
