When Francisco Pizarro and a few hundred Spanish soldiers set foot in Peru in the late 1520's, they initiated a savage war of conquest against the vast Inca Empire – a terrible conflict that entailed massacres, deadly betrayals, greed, enslavement, and other heartless brutalities.

With his large Color Field paintings, he strove to create an active and spiritual relationship between the viewer and the painting. Rothko’s early works, figure and urban life scenes, later changed to images taken from mythology and religion before becoming the colorful rectangular forms hovering on fields of stained color. This class will examine his journey and impact.

This talk will explore the history of The Manhattan Project, looking at the fact that while many celebrated the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as having helped to bring the Second World War to a close, the reality is a lot more complicated. We’ll examine not just the development of the atomic bomb and the long shadow it cast, but also explore some of the fascinating and little known ramifications of how the success of the Manhattan Project continues to affect us even 77 years later.
