Description

(At the instructor's request, the class date was changed from October 19 to November 30.)
Early American Folk Art sculpture includes functional objects like weathervanes, gravestones, ship figureheads, and trade signs. The last of these, figureheads and trade signs, are particularly engaging.  These painted sculptures served as signs to identify ships and businesses, helping those who could not read. Made of wood, many of these sculptures fell victim to fire, flood, or neglect, making their survival rare. As a result, some of these delightful sculptures bring high prices at auction today.
