Fiction inspired by the author’s own biography can be incredibly powerful. Prize-winning author Louise Erdrich’s family includes her mother’s Chippewa line and her father’s German-American line. Her grandfather’s life inspired her latest novel. Set in the 1950s, a night watchman by trade becomes a political organizer to fight the federal government’s efforts to take over Chippewa land in North Dakota.
