Description
(BUNDLE AND SAVE $12 when you also sign up for related classes #173, 182, 201) Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans from 800, called his new capital in the northern city of Aachen, the “Second Rome.” He commissioned builders, mosaicists, and artists from Rome and Byzantium, as well as from Irish and Anglo-Saxon monasteries in the north, to assert his goal to revive the Roman Empire, this time on northern barbarian soil. We’ll visit Charlemagne’s Palace Chapel at Aachen and view illuminated manuscripts.
