China’s economy was the largest in the world for many centuries until the Opium Wars with Britain in the late 1800s. By 1870 China’s share of global GDP fell by half, and its territorial sovereignty was compromised until the end of World War II. Some China experts believe that in 1949 Beijing began a 100-year plan (The Hundred-Year Marathon) to regain global supremacy by 2049. Will China seek to police the world or join the family of nations as a peaceful ally?
