Description
This presentation covers the May 2020 police-involved shooting of Silver Spring resident Finan Berhe, which unfortunately resulted in Mr. Berhe’s death. We will discuss the review of the case by the Howard County State’s Attorney’s office, and why they decided not to prosecute the officer. We will also discuss some of the community criticism to the charging decision as well as comments by local politicians. Much of the class discussion will focus on the question of whether Mr. Berhe was suffering from a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting, the legal implications of that issue, and what can be done to prevent similar situations in the future.
