While a hugely unpopular king in his lifetime, King George IV left a substantial legacy in the arts.  In 2020, the 200th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King George IV, Buckingham Palace recognized the king’s role as a patron of the arts with a major exhibition.  He expanded the royal collection of Old Masters and built the orientalist caprice, The Brighton Royal Pavilion. We will look at the monarch’s collecting trends, his patronage of contemporary artists like Sir Thomas Lawrence and the enrichment of the royal collection.
