Heinrich Schliemann was of the rip-and-tear school of archaeology. He excavated Troy and Mycenae before archaeological methods were developed. He was never accepted as a professional, but his discoveries brought Greek Mythology back to life and were instrumental in bringing prehistory into the public domain.
