Description

Explore the landmarks of London, as they would have been seen during the time of Shakespeare. Learn about the water taxis shooting the rapids under the London Bridge (which had the heads of traitors on display as you entered). Learn how John Stowe’s printed guide to the city was so important and why locations in the city play an important part in Ben Jonson’s plays (often with in jokes).  We’ll do a survey of bear baiting, bookstalls in churches, riots, prostitution, and sumptuary laws. What was it like to live in London when you could see William Shakespeare himself perform in his plays?
