Description

(This class coincides with the National Gallery exhibit:  The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler, through October 22 in the East Building.)

American expatriate, dandy, irascible personality and conscientious artist, James A.M. Whistler worked in multiple media—drawing, printmaking, pastel and oil. Famously denying any narrative content in his portraits and landscapes, he entitled his works using musical nomenclature.  We’ll explore Whistler’s profound effect on American art.
