Description

It took a further century after Julius Caesar’s abortive campaigns in Britain in 55-54 BC before the Romans returned to finish the job. After a terrifying rebellion under the Iceni ruler Boudicca, the Romans were able to conquer most of the island, but Emperor Hadrian drew a line on the map with his famous Wall that foreshadowed the division between England and Scotland that still exists today. The Romans ruled much of Britain for nearly four centuries, and they left a legacy that can still be seen in the British landscape today in the names of important cities and in the routes of British highways, many of which follow the original Roman road system.  (For related classes about the Celts and the Roman World, see #122 and #174.)
