Description
George Washington’s youth is the least understood period of his life. In this talk, Professor Denver Brunsman, Chair of the History Department at George Washington University, will explore Washington’s difficult relationship with his mother, Mary Ball Washington; his early experiences surveying and soldiering, which put him into close contact with Native Americans in western lands; and his marriage to Martha Dandridge Custis and efforts to establish himself as a colonial gentleman in the British Empire. Far from mature or fully American, the young Washington holds a number of surprises for us today.
