It was called the “Trial of the Century.” The Scopes “Monkey” Trial pitted America’s greatest defense attorney Clarence Darrow against renowned politician/lawyer William Jennings Bryan in a courtroom battle over whether evolution should be taught in the nation’s classrooms. In this lecture, UMD professor Michael Ross will show how the nation’s fascination with this case reflected deep cultural divisions in 1920s America, some of which are still with us today.
