Photos of the war in Ukraine include devastating images of Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox churches, their domes bombed, gold-laden altars ransacked, sacred icons strewn on the ground. The forms, functions, and sacred meaning of modern Russian and Ukrainian churches have common roots in ancient Constantinople (Istanbul). In this talk, we’ll examine what the distinctive forms of Eastern Orthodox art and architecture tell us about the break, during ancient and medieval times, of Orthodox Christianity from the Roman Catholic church.
