One of the most critically acclaimed cultural productions of the twenty-first century, Hamilton follows the rags-to-riches life story of America’s first treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton. While Paris was the birthplace of the modern department store (Le Bon Marche, 1852), the format was quickly emulated by American entrepreneurs. Stores resembling palaces cropped up across the our country. Largely the work of two women and a number of men, each designed stores to try to outdo one another, offering unique departments or services to draw buyers in. From luxurious interiors, elevators, and escalators, to book signing events and bridal registries, these emporiums stocked more than one could ever imagine. The Digital Revolution, aka the Information Age, aka the Post-Industrial Revolution is the transformation that we are experiencing in our time.  This transformation has its roots in the 1940’s with the invention of computers, but probably begins in the 1970’s with the development of the microchip that led to personal computers and the application of micro-processors in a wide variety of fields.  Improvements in computing capacity have enabled the processing higher volumes of data and increased the productivity of individual workers.  The digital age has transformed the way we live.  This lecture is about the history of computers, the innovators that invented them, and how computers have changed society.  This is a story of innovation.
