Calling all devoted Jane Austen lovers! Four Jane Austen novels have been rewritten by modern authors. Whether or not Emma is your favorite, we think Alexander McCall Smith’s retelling merits your reading. He wrote: “First and foremost, I felt that if I were to tackle Emma I should do so with proper respect. That means that a novel of that importance should not be subverted, but should be approached in a spirit of celebration, and indeed admiration.” Did he succeed? Let’s talk about it! Please read (or reread) both the original book and McCall's version so you can participate in our structured, facilitated, Zoom discussion. Authors: Alexander McCall Smith, 2015, and Jane Austen, 1815. Limit: 20
