We no longer fear the “strangling angel” of diphtheria, the deadly bite of the rabid dog, or the specter of polio each summer, largely due to vaccination. Using the rich collections at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, this lecture will explore the history of vaccination in the United States from the introduction of the smallpox vaccine in 1800 to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
