We've reserved a block of seats for Oasis participants to attend a screening and post-show discussion of the new documentary Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round.   It's the untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, an extraordinary history-making partnership was born. The pickets attracted Nazis, Congressman, and a press avalanche. Picketing together over the sweltering summer led to partying together, and union organizers mentored student activists. Ten 1961 Freedom Riders, including Stokely Carmichael, were incubated on the Glen Echo picket line, and the carousel arrests were challenged in the Supreme Court case.

For over six decades, John le Carré wrote spy novels that first defined and then transcended the genre.  His novels changed how Britain's intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6 conducted their work.  Our selection is his twenty-sixth and final published novel; his youngest son promised to ensure no books were left unpublished by his death.  From that son:  “My father is in these pages, striving as he always did to tell the truth, spin the yarn, and show you the world.  Welcome to Silverview.” Please read the book so you can participate in our structured, facilitated, Zoom discussion.  Author: John le Carre, 2021. (Note: Please join the meeting at 3 pm if you would like some assistance using the features of Zoom.  Otherwise, join us at 3:15 pm for the start of our discussion.)

Fifty years ago, President Richard Nixon directed Attorney General Elliott Richardson to fire Archibald Cox -- the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate affair. Richardson refused and resigned -- as did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. Solicitor General Robert Bork, the number three official in the Justice Department -- and by then the acting attorney general -- reluctantly fired Cox. What quickly became known as the Saturday Night Massacre deepened Nixon's political and legal problems. We'll look at what led up to the events of that day, what transpired and when, and what followed. We'll also see how the firing and resignations were covered by network television news.
